Quarter-Million-Dollar Gift Establishes Women’s Leadership Program at IUP

Molly George Shattuck '89A gift to IUP from a Baltimore-area family foundation will enable the university to create a new Women’s Leadership Program.

The Shattuck Family Foundation’s gift of $250,000 establishes the Molly George Shattuck ’89 Leadership Fund, which will provide conference and retreat opportunities for female students in coordination with IUP’s Eberly College of Business and Information Technology.

The fund is named in honor of Shattuck, an alumna of Eberly College and Kittanning, Pa., native. While perhaps best known for her stint as a Baltimore Ravens cheerleader, Shattuck is a healthy-living advocate and an accomplished speaker and philanthropist, giving her time as the American Diabetes Association’s Healthy Living Ambassador and the American Heart Association’s Go Red Mission and Engagement chair. She also assists the United Way and other organizations. Shattuck’s book, Vibrant Living, will be released worldwide on February 4, 2014.  Based on her philosophy and 21-day program for achieving better health and living life with purpose, Vibrant Living has been endorsed by Dr. Arthur Agatston, creator of the South Beach Diet, and other cardiologists and health-care professionals.

A 2013 Clementine Peterson Award winner, Shattuck was recognized in 2012 with the NAACP’s Thurgood Marshall Award for Community and Business and named among Maryland’s Top 100 Women by the Maryland Daily Record.

"I believe it's imperative to give young women opportunities that will enable them to use their inner strengths and create the lives they want,” Shattuck said. “When you bring a tribe of women together to discuss the challenges they face in the workplace and with their families, their social lives, and even their hobbies, they'll all benefit by hearing from each other. Some women are natural leaders. Some are not. All deserve to be exposed to the skills and lessons learned from women who have life experiences to share.”

Officials at IUP are excited about the opportunities the gift provides and by the enthusiasm alumni have for the university.

“When alumni like Molly Shattuck care about what happens here and give to IUP, it serves as an endorsement of the good work we do in preparing students for their roles in making our world a better place,” said Bill Speidel, vice president for University Advancement

“We are truly grateful for Molly's support and for her engagement with the college,” said Robert Camp, Eberly College’s dean. “Through new programming, we hope to instill in our students the enthusiasm, entrepreneurial spirit, and genuine care for others that Molly has displayed throughout her career as a business executive and as a civic leader.”
