Students Network at IUP Business Conference

ASC ConferenceNearly 100 Eberly College of Business students attended the American Society for Competitiveness Annual Conference November 7–9 in Pittsburgh.

More than 100 papers were presented at the event, sponsored by Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Also featured were academic awards for papers, panel sessions, and keynote speakers.

This year’s theme was “Global Competition: From Policy to Prosperity.” Conference objectives included sharing real world experiences and competitive approaches, integrating research and practice, and formulating competitive strategies for success.

The main goal of the American Society for Competitiveness is to foster education and knowledge in areas related to competitiveness by enabling the exchange of information and ideas among educators, policy makers, and business people.

The society uses their conferences and publications to serve the needs of those interested in further developing their discipline and applying organizational theory to their work.

ASC Conference1“Students certainly learned a lot from the featured luncheon speakers and from the three panels focused on specific industries--manufacturing, energy, and financial services,” said Eberly Dean’s Associate Prashanth Bharadwaj, ASC academic program chair. “The speakers were articulate and knowledgeable.”

Networking was an important component for the students who attended the conference.

“The luncheon allowed for plenty of time to network with the professionals, who were more than happy to share their wealth of information and expertise,” said senior Josh Noble. “The 2013 ASC conference was an invaluable experience during my undergrad career.”

On Thursday, Kennametal, Inc., located in Latrobe, received an award for competitiveness and Colleen Cordova, vice president, spoke.

During the Friday luncheon, Dennis Yablonsky, former secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, was the featured speaker.

Abbas Ali is the Executive Director and Dean Robert Camp is a founding board member of the ASC.
