Writing Center Tutors Receive Travel Grants to Present at National Conference

Five current and former IUP Writing Center tutors received travel grant awards to present papers at the 29th annual National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW), November 1-3, 2013.

Undergraduate tutor Victoria Loch received funding from IUP’s School of Graduate Studies and Research. She presented her paper on a panel, “Building Rapport Online,” with IUP doctoral student Lindsay Sabatino, who directs the Digital Writing Studio at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Sabatino was the assistant director of the IUP Writing Center from 2009 to 2011.

Sabatino, graduate student tutors Tarah Dunn and Adelay Witherite, and Writing Center Assistant Director Leigh Ann Dunning also received travel awards from NCPTW. Witherite, Dunn, and Dunning presented their research on a panel titled “Investigating the Negotiation of Identities in the Tutorial.”

In addition to the tutors’ presentations, Dr. Ben Rafoth, director of the IUP Writing Center, also attended the conference and served on two panels. Rafoth organized a panel devoted to the research and theoretical contributions of Dr. Harvey Kail, University of Maine, who was honored at the conference for his scholarly achievements. Rafoth and Dunning also served on a panel offering advice to tutors who plan to apply to graduate school.

The conference was held at The Berkeley Preparatory School in Tampa, Florida.

NCPTW is the oldest national writing center conference in the U.S. and attracts about 500 participants each year. In 1992, Rafoth and Dr. Lea Masiello, IUP Professor Emeritus, hosted the conference at IUP. In 2003, Rafoth hosted the first joint conference with the International Writing Centers Association in Hershey, Pennsylvania, which was attended by 951 tutors, teachers, and writing center directors.

The 2014 conference will be held in Orlando, Florida.
