Chiarulli and Students Particiate in Archaeology Day at State Capitol

Beverly Chiarulli and second-year graduate students in the M.A. in Applied Archaeology program traveled to Harrisburg on November 6, 2013, to join archaeologists from the Pennsylvania State Museum, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, and Bureau for Historic Preservation in the annual Archaeology Day in Harrisburg in the State Capitol Building.

The annual event was cancelled last year because of Hurricane Sandy, but resumed this year. The students are in Chiarulli’s advanced CRM class. As part of the event, the students prepared posters and displays on a variety of topics including:

“Property Rights and Archaeological Resources” by Ashley Taylor, Katie Turner, and Tim Carn

“Archeotourism” handout by Kate Craig, Kate Adam, and Stephanie Schowalter, which featured sites that are publicly accessible, such as Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Gettysburg.

“The Jakes Rocks Survey in the Allegheny National Forest” by Matt Howryla and Kirk Smith

“A Geophysical Survey of a Small Site in Indiana County” by Dan Sandrowicz

“What Archaeologists Learn from Stone Tools”  by Mark Durante and Corey Patek

Michele Cole developed a packet for the teachers at St. Stephens School. Marion Smeltzer organized an activity on Archaeology Day for the students to make cordage, drill holes in rocks using stone drills, and smooth and polish the stones to produce pendants.
