Free Film Screenings on Saturday, November 9

Two films by journalist and filmmaker Kevin McKiernan will be shown on Saturday, November 9.

Bringing King to China

  • 4:00–5:30 p.m. in Johnson Hall, Room 247

Attendance vouchers and Diversity Counts Verification forms will be provided at the end of the film.

This film documents McKiernan’s daughter’s efforts to have a play about Martin Luther King, Jr. staged by China’s National Theater Company in Beijing. The film also explores American and Chinese views of King and the Civil Rights Movement. (2008, 85 minutes)

This film explores the struggles for self-determination of Kurdish communities in Iraq and Turkey, and exposes contradictions in U.S. foreign policy toward Kurds and the nations where they reside. The film also questions the role of major news outlets in disseminating and silencing stories about Kurdish groups. (2001, 81 minutes)

Kevin McKiernanOn Monday and Tuesday, November 11–12, 2013, IUP will host journalist and filmmaker Kevin McKiernan, who will screen and discuss two of his documentary films, Bringing King to China and Good Kurds, Bad Kurds.

McKiernan has over three decades of experience as a journalist, foreign correspondent, and documentary filmmaker, and he has appeared on ABC, CBS, NBC, and NPR. Find out more about Kevin McKiernan.

Bringing King to China

  • Monday, November 11
  • 5:30–7:00 p.m. in Weyandt Hall, Room 208

Immediately following the film will be a presentation by and discussion with filmmaker Kevin McKiernan about his experiences in producing this documentary. (The discussion is from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m.) Attendance vouchers and Diversity Counts Verification forms will be provided at the end of both the film and the discussion.

Good Kurds, Bad Kurds

  • Tuesday, November 12
  • 4:30–6:00 p.m. in Eberly Auditorium

Immediately following the film will be a presentation by and discussion with filmmaker Kevin McKiernan about the journalistic and communications-related issues raised by his reporting on the Kurds in the era of the first Gulf War. (The discussion is from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m.) Attendance vouchers and Diversity Counts Verification forms will be provided at the end of both the film and the discussion.
