Newkerk Scholarship Awarded for 2013

Lexie and Shannon with the Newkerk AwardThe Department of Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) is pleased to announce two recipients of the Nancy Newkerk Scholarship: Alexandra (Lexie) Elliott and Shannon O’Reilly.

Lexie Elliott is a graduate of Westminster College and a current SAHE graduate student. She has a graduate assistantship in Greek Life in the IUP Center for Student Life. In presenting the scholarship to Elliott, John Lowery (department chairperson) shared a quote from a letter of support for Elliott which stated “She is a genuine advocate for the students she works with and the utmost processional with her colleagues. Her actions speak for themselves and she is most deserving of this award to support her continued success.”

Shannon O’Reilly is a graduate of the University of Connecticut and a current SAHE graduate student. She holds a graduate assistantship in Training and Student Leadership in the IUP Office of Housing, Residential Living, and Dining. Lowery quoted one of O’Reilly’s references: “Shannon demonstrates care when challenging her students to find their voice in addition to their success . . . She sets high expectations for those with whom she works, and with her guidance and support, they routinely exceed them.”

Awarded since 1999, the Nancy Newkerk scholarship is awarded to a second-year SAHE graduate student who demonstrates outstanding contributions to college students, student affairs activities, the SAHE Department, and the broader higher education community.

The scholarships were presented on November 6, 2013.
