Dr. Matthew WhitedMatthew Whited is the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics’ 2013  Young Alumni Award recipient.

In 2003, Whited received a B.A. in Psychology as a student in the Psychology Department honors program. He had a second major in Biology, was a Robert E. Cook Honors College student, and graduated summa cum laude.

He subsequently received an M.S. in Psychology with major focus on health psychology in 2007 from West Virginia University, and received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2009 from West Virginia University. Whited completed an American Psychology Association-accredited internship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi.

Whited received a post-doctoral fellowship for training at the Behavioral Medicine Research Program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Amherst, Massachusetts. Following his post-doctoral training, he joined the Department of Psychology, East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, as an assistant professor.

Whited is a psychophysiologist and clinical scientist who is interested in the association between major depressive disorder and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Specifically, he is interested in understanding the reasons for this association and identifying behavioral interventions that contribute to efforts to prevent/postpone cardiovascular disease. The main candidate mechanisms of interest are health behaviors surrounding weight management, and autonomic nervous system activity. His research efforts are currently focused on understanding the influence of two different modes of depression treatment (i.e., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and behavior therapy) on CVD risk and cardiovascular reactivity. Whited also leads the Depression Specialty Service in the ECU psychology department’s PASS clinic.
