Important Change In Registration

When students register for the upcoming Winter and Spring sessions, students will no longer be automatically able to register for a course that they have successfully completed. Starting this registration, except for existing “repeatable” courses, students will be blocked from duplicating courses unless granted an override from their associate dean. See details below:

Process:

  • When a student attempts to register for a course they have already passed, or when a student attempts to register for a course they have failed more than once, they will receive the error message “Dean’s approval required to repeat course.”
  • Students who have received the error message can fill out an override request form (available on their college’s website or in their dean’s office).
  • Completed forms are taken to the student’s designated associate dean (not the associate dean where the course is offered).
  • If approved, the override is entered, and the student is notified and can then register for the course.

Please note the following important information:

  • Courses that already permit multiple repeats, such as special topics, music ensembles, etc., are not affected by this process.
  • This new process is for undergraduate students only.
  • The process evaluates equivalent courses and transfer courses.
  • Courses registered in a future term are evaluated. For example, students registered for a course in the upcoming Spring term will receive a registration error if they attempt to register for the same course in the Winter term.
  • If the student is currently enrolled in the course, he or she will not be able to register for that course in a future term prior to grade processing at the end of the term.
  • If the student has withdrawn from the course, he or she will be able to register for it in a future term.
  • Students who have received a grade of "F" may repeat the course. If they have already failed the course twice, they will receive the registration error message.
  • Students who have received a grade of "D" will receive the registration error message if they attempt to repeat that course or an equivalent course.
