Helmrich-Rhodes Discusses Safety Culture at Marcellus Shale Conference

Laura Helmrich-Rhodes, CSP, associate professor in the IUP Safety Sciences Department, responded to interview questions from Mila Spencer of the Pittsburgh Business Times regarding the “Evolution of Safety Culture in the Shale Gas Industry: 2007–2013” following her presentation at the Marcellus Shale Insights conference in Philadelphia.

The impact of large organizations (owner/operators and E&Ps) with established cultures on small organization through program verification, workers’ compensation EMR, OSHA TRIR scrutiny, and requiring JSAs has caused a “paradigm shift.” Rhodes said that the industry is now seeing the safety professionals as the new “business partner.”

Rhodes further predicts that the gas industry will be a great influence on reducing worker fatalities and injuries in other industries, such as construction, by increasing the importance of safety culture and with small-scale activities such as job safety analysis.
