Mindfulness Days: One- or Four-Day Workshops

Both a one-day and a four-day workshop for IUP faculty, staff, graduate students, and community members will be offered in October, sponsored by the Mindfulness Living Learning Community and the Center for Health and Well-Being.

One-Day Workshop

This workshop is an orientation to mindfulness, instruction, and hands-on experience with meditation practices that include: 

  • ​sitting meditation
  • walking meditation
  • lying down meditation (deep relaxation)
  • eating meditation
  • meditative movement

(one-day workshops):

  • Cost: $50 (faculty and community members), $25 (staff and graduate student)
  • ​Bring a brown bag lunch
  • Register for workshops
  • The registration deadline is one week before each workshop

Four Days of Mindfulness Cumulative Package

  • ​The October 18 session plus the following three sessions:
  • The in-depth understanding of meditation practice for a personal and interpersonal home practice
  • The mindfulness-based stress reduction curriculum of Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D
  • Select teachings of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh that help create a nourishing community of practitioners who grow and transform together
  • Discussion on the integration of mindfulness practice in the workplace and on campus
  • Attendance at all four days will earn IUP employees 25 wellness credits through Highmark

Four-Day Package Dates:

  • Friday, October 18, 2013 (prerequisite)
  • Friday, November 15, 2013
  • Friday, January 31, 2014
  • Friday, March 7, 2014

  • 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (check in 9:00 a.m.)

Please note: Only the October 18 workshop can be registered for individually.   

Attendance at all four Mindfulness Days are for those interested in building an in-depth personal, interpersonal, and work practice, in addition to building a deeply supportive meditation community at IUP. The four days are cumulative in learning and practice and therefore offered as a package.

  • Package for all four dates: $150 (faculty and community members); $75 (staff and graduate student)
  • Leave slips are not required
  • Register for the workshops
  • The deadline to register for the remaining workshops is one week before each workshop

Led by Katherine Hammond Holtz, Psy.D

Katherine Hammond Holtz, Psy.DKatherine Hammond Holtz graduated from the Doctor of Psychology program at IUP in 1992. She formally began practicing meditation in 1986. In 1991, she became a student of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. In 2002, she received ordination into his lay order followed by participation in the teacher training-intensive programs taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn, becoming an identified mindfulness instructor. She has organized and led mindfulness practices at retreats since 2000, including national retreats. In 2010, she began leading meditation workshops for health care professionals, graduate students, and the community throughout the state of Pennsylvania. Having integrated meditation practice and psychotherapy for 15 years, she has adapted mindfulness practices to address a wide variety of clinical disorders. She currently resides in Pittsburgh with her husband, where she teaches and sees clients in her private practice. To learn more about Dr. Hammond Holtz, visit her website.
