IUP String Project Open House Kicks Off Semester

The IUP String Project will host its opening event of the year on Saturday, September 14, from 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. in Cogswell Hall. The Open House is for new and returning students.

The event will provide an introductory session and instrument petting zoo for new beginning students, a variety of interactive musical activities for string students, and an informational session for parents. The event will conclude with an informal recital by String Project teachers and students.

The morning musical activities will be led by String Project Master Teacher Swana Chepaitis, IUP professors Stanley Chepaitis and Linda Jennings, and the IUP String Project teachers, music students in the Music Department.

The event is free and open to any interested string students in the community. For more information and to register, e-mail Linda Jennings at ljenning@iup.edu or call 724-357-2649.

The IUP String Project, a part of the new IUP Community Music School, is a community music education outreach program for children ages 5–18 in Indiana and the surrounding area. The IUP String Project is also provides a teacher-training program for IUP music students who are the teachers in the program. The IUP String Project is one of 43 similar programs joined under the auspices of the National String Project Consortium, dedicated to promoting string music education in the United States. As a member of the NSPC, the IUP String Project joins in addressing the two main issues facing string education today: 1) the low numbers of public schools that offer string music education programs to children and 2) the critical shortage of string teachers in the U.S.

The program is directed by IUP music faculty member Linda Jennings. Visit the IUP String Project for more information.
