An overview of some of the most important changes with the new Aloha web editor, plus some tips and how to handle some problems. Both sessions are identical.

After the first week of using the new CMS editor, the Web Team wants to fill you in on some tips, and how to get around some problems. We are also offering two "What's New" sessions for web maintainers.

Web Browser

If you previously used Internet Explorer for web editing, you should switch to Firefox. Be sure to bookmark the Staging login page (http://staging.www.iup.edu/ iuplogin), or you may even want to make it the browser’s homepage.

Recommended browsers:

  • Firefox > 3.5 (For example, don't use Firefox 3.5)
  • Chrome > 11
  • Internet Explorer > 8

Do not use Safari.

For the time being, if you are logged into staging.www.iup.edu, do not browse www.iup.edu in the same browser at the same time (for example, if you’re using Firefox on staging, use IE to browse the live IUP site), else you will get kicked out of the staging CMS. If this happens, you will need to close all Firefox windows and then reopen and log in again.

Calendar

Due to a sitewide problem with the calendar, we ask that you do not enter any new events into your calendar until further notice. There have been problems with recurring events displaying properly.

When event editing resumes, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • As events are now actual pieces of content, they fall under the same naming restrictions as any other piece of content. No two content items (html, image, etc.) in the same folder can have the exact same name. Using the same name in the same folder will result in a (2), (3), etc. being added to the title.
  • Because of this, if there are multiple instances of an event, you may want to include the date in the title. For example, “Keystone Repertory Theater: Our Town, Aug. 4”.
  • When editing an event, only click the Save button once. The CMS editor is slow to process events, and when you click the Save button the editing window will sometimes jump, almost looking like a new screen is asking you to Save again. But waiting a few moments will result in the editor resetting back to the calendar view.

Quicklinks

When creating a quicklink to a page that uses an alias (for example, www.iup.edu/livelyarts), an Insert Quicklink window will appear asking you to choose either the “manual alias” or the “/WorkArea” link (the one that ends with the content ID number). You should always choose the “/WorkArea” choice. Never use the alias for making a quicklink.

Menus

The View Menu option is currently not available within the CMS editor. But, you can always edit a menu directly from the staging webpage. When not in Preview mode, look for the Edit Menu button underneath the right-hand menu.

"What's New"

This session will be offered twice, and will take roughly 30–45 minutes:

  • Thursday, August 1, 1:30 p.m.
  • Friday, August 2, 10:00 a.m.

Both take place in the IT Support Center Training Lab (Delaney Hall, Room G41).

Registration is required.

These identical sessions will be basic overviews, not full-fledged training sessions. We'll present some of the more important changes with the new Aloha web editor and let web maintainers get their hands dirty with it. Regular training workshops will begin the following week, and we'll have an announcement about them shortly.
