Gift Honors IUP Alumni, Establishes Library, Creates Scholarship

An area philanthropist’s gift of $100,000 to Indiana University of Pennsylvania honors two alumni and long-time Indiana residents.

In honor of Walt and Sue Lewis of Indiana, Nell Jack, of Indiana and Scottsdale, Ariz., is establishing a resource library to support new energy-related academic programming being developed by the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology. The gift also establishes the Walter and Suzanne Lewis Basketball Scholarship, which will benefit members of the IUP men’s team.

“Mrs. Jack’s gift will directly benefit students and is an exciting as well as a generous one,” said Bill Speidel, vice president for University Advancement at IUP. “We are particularly charged about Eberly’s new initiatives in the energy industry. We very much appreciate Mrs. Jack’s long-standing support of the university and our students.”

Jack’s steadfast record of generosity to IUP includes support of women’s athletics through the annual Nell Jack Golf Classic, and, with her late husband, the Nell and Sam Jack Distinguished American Lecturer Series, which brought speakers of national prominence to IUP during the 1980s and into the 1990s.

A 1970 graduate of IUP, Walt Lewis is a partner of the CPA firm Smith Lewis Chess and Company, of Indiana and Uniontown. A member of the Eberly College of Business Hall of Distinction, he received the IUP Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor bestowed by the IUP Alumni Association. A 1971 IUP graduate, Sue Lewis taught for many years in the Indiana Area School District. In recognition of their support of IUP athletics, they both received the 2012 Bell Ringer Award in as part of the IUP Athletics Hall of Fame. They are the parents of three adult children.
