HoodleBug Brass Quintet to Present Recital

The HoodleBug Brass will present their Spring 2013 recital on Tuesday, May 7, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in room 121 of the Cogswell Music Building on the IUP campus. At 6:00 on the same evening, a recital featuring various student brass quintets will be held in the same room.

The HoodleBug Brass is the brass quintet-in-residence at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is comprised of the four full-time brass faculty within the Department of Music and the assistant dean of the College of Fine Arts. The ensemble performs regularly on the IUP campus and presents numerous clinics and concerts in public schools and churches throughout the region each year. The HoodleBug Brass released its first compact disc, entitled Brass Fac’s, in March 2004. Their second disc, Off the Trac’s, was released in October 2009 and their first commercial release, Christmas Postcards from the HoodleBug Brass, was released in October 2012. The quintet performs works of all styles, from the Baroque to contemporary, pop, and jazz.

Works by various composers will be performed, including Bruce Frazier, Jim Stephensonn, and Zach Collins, professor of Tuba at IUP.

Featured during this recital will be Laura Ferguson, associate professor of Music Education at IUP. She is a frequent clinician for the International Association of Jazz Educators, where she presents at international conferences as well as serving as a faculty member of IAJE’s Teacher Training Institute. A former Down-Beat award winner for Best Collegiate Vocal Jazz Recording, she continues to perform regularly in the immediate area with Ferguson and Friends jazz combo. She will perform with the HoodleBug Brass on Jim Stephenson’s “Jazz Interlude.”

The guest artist for the evening’s recital will be P. Bradley Ulrich, professor of trumpet at Western Carolina University. Ulrich has performed countless recitals both as a soloist and in brass quintets. He has performed and taught across the United States and in Russia, Canada, England, Ireland, Wales, St. Barths, Italy, China, Germany, and Jamaica. Ulrich is the artistic director for the International Trumpet Festival of Russia. Ulrich performed with the HoodleBug Brass during their October 2012 tour of St. Petersburg and Moscow. He will perform Bruce Frazier’s “Blue Ridge Suite,” which was commissioned specifically for Ulrich and the HoodleBug Brass. Ulrich will also present clinics and master classes during his three-day stay at IUP; his appearance is supported in part by the Jupiter Band Instrument Company and the IUP Department of Music.

A “hoodlebug” is a local term for “doodlebug,” the name given to a single-car, self-propelled train or trolley. At the southern end of the IUP campus can be found the Hoodlebug Trail. This is a six-mile recreation and commuter trail located in the central portion of Indiana County.
