Ahn Trio and Nai-Ni Chen Dance to Present Open Sessions

Temptation of the Muses The world-renowned Ahn Trio and Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company will present a joint question/answer and discussion session on artistic collaboration within the influences of Asian and Western music at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at IUP in the Zink Hall Dance Studio Auditorium. This will be followed by a dance masterclass by Nai-Ni Chen at 7:00 p.m.

Interested students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to participate in the 5:30 p.m. session as the musicians of the Ahn Trio and dancers of Nai-Ni Chen dance company discuss how Asian and Western music have influenced each of them and their two separate art forms. They will also share their thoughts on the fusion of their artistic disciplines, and how it materialized in the mesmerizing production Temptation of the Muses, to be performed by them at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, in Fisher Auditorium.

At 7:00 p.m., Nai-Ni Chen will lead a masterclass on Chinese dance for IUP dance students and local high school dance students from the private studios of Joan Van Dyke and Mary Strong. This is open to anyone to observe/audit, but due to space considerations, you must contact ArtsPath associate director for arts-in-education services, Jeff Wacker, at jwacker@iup.edu, or Holly Boda-Sutton at hboda@iup.edu if you wish to participate.

In addition to the two IUP outreach presentations, Nai-Ni Chen will also present a program titled “The Art of Chinese Dance” to elementary students in grades 3–5 in Blairsville, and the Ahn Trio will present a lecture/demonstration to music students at Indiana Area High School.

Temptation of the MusesA blossom of color, energy, and motion, the dances of Nai-Ni Chen fuse the dynamic freedom of American modern dance with the grace and splendor of Asian art. Temptation of the Muses draws on elements from the flowing lines of Chinese calligraphy to the thundering motion of the martial arts. And, in a true fusion of dance and music, the dancers are joined on stage by the Ahn Trio, one of classical music’s most innovative ensembles, all moving to music composed by Kenji Bunch, an American musician who has emerged as one of the most engaging, influential, and prolific composers of his generation.

All outreach events are presented by ArtsPath, the arts-in-education program of the Lively Arts.
