The New York Broadway tour of Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musicalwill be presented Sunday, April 14, 2013, in Fisher Auditorium as part of the Lively Arts’Ovations! series. The performance will begin at 8:00 p.m. With its strong language and brief nudity, it is not recommended for younger audiences.

This 2009 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival, directed by Diane Paulus, is a celebration of life, a love letter to freedom, and a passionate cry for hope and change. The musical broke new ground when it first opened in 1967 by defining the genre of “rock musical,” changing the face of musical theater for generations to come.

With a score including such enduring musical numbers as “Let the Sun Shine In,” “Aquarius,” “Hair,” “Easy to Be Hard,” and “Good Morning Starshine,” Hair depicts the birth of a cultural movement in the 1960s that changed America forever.

The musical follows a group of hopeful, free-spirited young people who advocate a lifestyle of pacifism and free love in a society riddled with intolerance and brutality during the Vietnam War. As they explore sexual identity, challenge racism, experiment with drugs, and protest the “Establishment” in general, the “tribe” creates an irresistible message of hope that continues to resonate with audiences 40 years later.

This critically-acclaimed revival became a theatrical tour de force in its limited engagement in Central Park, later moving to Broadway, where it won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival as well as the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics’ Circle awards for Outstanding Revival of a Musical. Directed by Diane Paulus, who also directed the Tony Award-winning revival of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, and choreographed by Karole Armitage, Hair features a book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado with music by Galt MacDermot.

This inspiring new production features an exuberant finale and has a level of inclusiveness rarely seen in musical theater.

Tickets are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building on campus, by calling 724-357-1313, or online at IUP Tickets. Tickets range from $12 to $35, and seats remaining will be sold at the door starting at 7:00 p.m. prior to the performance.
