Pianola-Man Comes to IUP, April 13

BerkmanRenowned pianolist Bob Berkman will make a very special concert appearance as the first of many Pre-Inaugural events scheduled through the next month. The concert will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall located on the second floor of John Sutton Hall.

The pianola is a 19th century invention which not only allowed the playing of “pre-recorded” music but also featured an artist-performer who brought his or her own personal interpretation to the music in question. Like many innovations in the 20th century including the stereo phonograph, tape, cassettes, and CDs and later with the multiplicity of playback devices such as MP3 players, pads, and smart phones, the pianola had a marked effect on the music and musicianship of its time.

Berkman will play a wide variety of music for the concert from Classical to Ragtime to Folk. He will be joined by IUP piano professor Henry Wong Doe in a unique duet performance of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor (opus 16).

In celebration of the inaugural of IUP’s 26th presdient, Dr. Michael A. Driscoll has selected a number of themes that reflect his vision for IUP including tradition, opportunity, success, and excellence. The pianola reflects these themes, representing the tradition of keyboard music, the opportunity for our community to hear this unique style of repertoire, the success that the marriage of technology and music brings to musicians here and everywhere, and the excellence in music performance offered at IUP.

Admission is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building Box Office. Tickets remaining will be available at the door starting at 7:15 p.m. the night of the concert.
