What is Pink and Black and All Over the IUP Campus?

On April 2, 2013, over 100 ROX girls will invade the IUP campus to get a firsthand college experience. You may be asking yourself, “What in the world is an ROX girl?”

Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX) is an evidenced-based empowerment program for adolescent girls that is rapidly expanding in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Michelle Bruno, associate professor in the Counseling Department at IUP, was recently awarded a $45,000 grant from the FISA foundation to expand this program locally.

ROX, created in 2006 by Lisa Hinkelman from Ohio State University, is a comprehensive curriculum, based on an intense qualitative and quantitative data collection, designed to address the multiple pressures in a young girl’s life and to equip her with skills to effectively negotiate those challenges and situations. Findings indicate that girls who participate in ROX have statistically significant improvements in self-concept and self-esteem, as well as improved knowledge and skills to handle potentially threatening situations. They also evidence a decrease in girl bullying and relationally aggressive behaviors. Currently, ROX is being implemented by trained facilitators in seven rural schools in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

The IUP campus tour is included in the ROX curriculum to give ROX participants a head start on learning about the wide variety of academic and occupational opportunities available. The fifth through eighth grade girls from Connellsville Area Junior High School, Laurel Valley Elementary School, and RK Mellon Elementary School will enjoy a presentation highlighting the history of IUP, a comprehensive campus tour, and a delicious meal in the IUP dining hall.

Special thanks to the IUP Office of Admissions, especially Shannon Gironda, for all of the hard work and effort that was put forth in planning this special day for the ROX girls!
