Counseling Center Workshops: Spring 2013

The Counseling Center at the Center for Health and Well-Being is offering a series of workshops to talk about issues that commonly affect college students. The workshops will cover a variety of topics, including body image, stress, sleep, and mindfulness.

Attendance vouchers will be provided in case you would like to offer extra credit to students who attend.

Wednesday, February 13

Health at Every Size: Accepting and Loving Our Bodies

Have you ever felt frustrated about being on a diet? Do you ever feel like you are negatively evaluated due to your weight? Are you interested in improving your body image? This workshop will be both psycho-educational and interactive and will discuss dieting myths, the thinness ideal, and the tenets of the Health at Every Size (HAES) perspective. Come and learn more about HAES, which celebrates size diversity and advocates that being healthy does not necessary mean being thin.

Beyond High School Sex Ed: Actually Talking About Sex for Women

This thought-provoking, interactive workshop for women focuses on examining various sexual encounters experienced by college students that are not commonly discussed in traditional sex education. Attendees will have a chance to learn more about hookup culture on college campuses as well as hear the perspectives of other students on the subject. The workshop will discuss the impact of gender and socialization on various types of sexual encounters and give students the opportunity to ask questions about the experience of hooking up and hanging out while at college. It will also give women the opportunity to learn about sexual empowerment and think about what that means for them.

Sleep: It Does a Body Good

We all need sleep, but sometimes it gets neglected. Restful sleep is as important as diet and exercise, and is essential for maintaining good health, energy, learning, and memory. Come to this workshop to discuss common sleeping problems and learn new ways to get your zzzs.

Christopher Beckman: Still Clean

Catapulted into the national spotlight when he was only 24, artist and former Ralph Lauren model Christopher Beckman’s substance abuse and his homosexuality were tabloid fodder during his stint on MTV’s Real World Chicago. Sober for 12 years now, Beckman will lead a workshop candidly discussing his struggles with addiction, his recovery, and how he deals with the “real world” today in an environment constantly surrounded by temptation. He will share his story—documented in his book Clean: A New Generation in Recovery Speaks Out—and share insights into his future projects, including the book’s sequel, Still Clean. This workshop will be of great benefit to anyone wanting to better understand addictions and counseling of those in recovery. With ample time for Q&A, this is one of several activities scheduled during Beckman’s April visit to IUP.

What is Mindfulness, Anyway?

This workshop will be an introduction to the benefits of the practice of mindful awareness, or mindfulness. This is an age-old practice which can help quiet and stabilize the mind, reduce stress, increase the capacity for happiness, and help one be more connected to life in the moment. This practice helps us achieve a new perspective on ourselves and the world through direct experience and can expand our insight into a greater meaning and purpose for our lives. Now, how can you not be curious about that!

Going Home for the Summer

As the academic year comes to a close, many students have mixed feelings about spending the summer at home. The transition from college life to living at home can be stressful. If you think this might be true for you and/or your family members, come and learn about some of the ways that you might prepare for this change and manage the stress of straddling your life at college and your life at home.
