Richburg Publishes Study on Readability of Questionnaires for Auditory Processing Disorders

Cynthia McCormick Richburg, associate professor in the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology program, is co-author on an article published in the journal Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools (LSHSS).

The article, “A Computer-Based Readability Analysis of Questionnaires for Listening Difficulties Associated with Possible (Central) Auditory Processing Disorders,” is coauthored by Samuel Atcherson, Cynthia Richburg, Richard Zraick, and Cassandra George (an alumnus of the IUP Speech Pathology program).

The article reports on a descriptive study of the readability of eight questionnaires for (central) auditory processing disorders. The authors found good agreement across readability measures revealing reading levels between eighth and tenth grades. They concluded that clinicians should consider the literacy levels of adults responding to these questionnaires to ensure accurate results. This study adds to the research base on the appropriateness of assessment measures used to diagnose (central) auditory processing disorders.
