Around the World in 80 Days: Walnut Street Theatre

February 12, 2013
8:00 p.m.

Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center

Before there were pirates in the Caribbean or raiders of the lost ark, there was Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days, the mother of all adventure stories. Travel to 1872 and join the eccentric Phileas Fogg as he and his crew race perilously across continents and oceans, circling the world in a race against the clock.

This event is over.

The Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present the Walnut Street Theatre’s production of Around the World in 80 Days as its next Ovations! series event. This high-spirited theatrical journey across oceans and continents will be performed on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium.

Pack your bags and travel to London, 1872, where the wealthy Phileas Fogg will lead you on a whirlwind journey filled with exotic locales, daring adventures, and narrow escapes. It is an adventure for all generations. To settle a bet, the eccentric Fogg and his trusted valet are on a race against time while they avoid Detective Fix, a Scotland Yard gumshoe who suspects the strange travelers of bank robbery.

The Walnut Street Theatre Company is a critically acclaimed touring company from America’s oldest continuously operating theater. Their home base, often referred to simply as “The Walnut,” has been in operation for more than 200 years and currently sees over 1,200 drama students enroll annually in the Theatre School.

The Walnut has been home to many of America’s most popular plays before they were discovered by Broadway, including A Streetcar Named Desire with Marlon Brando, Gigi with Audrey Hepburn, and A Raisin in the Sun with Sidney Poitier.

This version of Around the World in 80 Days is Mark Brown’s thrilling adaptation of Jules Verne’s 1873 masterpiece. Using a variety of innovative techniques, five actors portray 39 characters in this fast-moving tour de force.

Tickets are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus or online at IUP Tickets. Tickets remaining can be purchased at the door starting one hour prior to the performance. Tickets are $23 regular admission, $18 for seniors and groups, and $12 for students and children.
