Woolcock has served as a volunteer of the Center for Teaching Excellence for almost 25 years. He is a charter member of the center, which was established in 1989, and is a longtime member of the advisory board.

He is also active in planning the center's faculty professional development activities—which include workshops, monthly meetings, and teaching circles—and in recognizing faculty members for active participation in these activities.

The John Woolcock Teacher/Scholar Award for Reflective Practice will be awarded annually to faculty members in any discipline.

The announcement was made at a ceremony held on December 14 by the center and the Chemistry Department.
