Truby Donates Collection of Books, Historical Documents to Military Science Department

The Military Science Department library is more than 300 books and historical documents richer, thanks to a donation by J. David Truby, professor emeritus of Journalism and U.S. Army veteran.

The donation came from Truby’s own professional library collection.

“I have known and worked with the ROTC folks ever since coming to IUP in 1970 and thought the students and staff would make far more use of these resources than I would at this point in my life,” said Truby, the cofounder and first chair of the Journalism Department.

The donated books include all branches of the service and range from military history to tactics, weaponry, logistics, and intelligence. Truby also gave the library his collection of documents and papers on topics such as 21st-century warfare, counterinsurgency, and psychological operations.

“Dr. Truby has been a great mentor to many of our cadets, who are now officers, and a true friend to this organization with this generous gift, a reflection of his dedication to the development of our future Army leaders and to IUP,” said Capt. David Sabulsky, ROTC instructor.

IUP has commissioned more than 1,944 students as U.S. Army officers, and 19 more are set to be commissioned later in the 2012–2013 academic year.

Truby was on active duty with the U.S. Army in 1960–1961 and then served as a Combat Intelligence noncommissioned officer for the U.S. Army Reserve. He has also served as a consultant to the military.

In addition to this most recent donation, the IUP Libraries is home to the J. David Truby Special Collection, which contains his journalistic and investigative books, manuscripts, speeches, and more.
