Based on William Steig’s 1990 book and the wildly popular, Oscar-winning DreamWorks film, Shrek the Musical brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage. This Lively Arts Ovations! event, direct from Broadway, is a one-night-only performance on Monday, December 10, 2012, in Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center, with a special early curtain time set for 7:00 p.m.

Shrek & Donkey

In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre—rather than your standard handsome prince--shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a villain with a “short” temper, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits and you have the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. And his name is Shrek.

Shrek the Musical is part romance, part twisted fairy tale, and all irreverent family-friendly fun. A musical truly for all ages.

The show features Jeanine Tesori’s terrific score of 19 songs, hilarious lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire (winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama), great dancing choreographed by Josh Prince, and breathtaking scenery and costumes designed by the Drama Desk Award-winning Tim Hatley.

After a tryout run in Seattle, Shrek the Musical opened on Broadway in December 2008 and ran for over a year before closing in January 2010. The Broadway production won a Tony Award for best costume design and Drama Desk Awards for best outstanding actor in a musical (Brian d’Arcy James as Shrek), outstanding set design, and outstanding costume design.

This production was also nominated for a 2009 Grammy in best musical show album. National tours soon followed starting in 2010 with international productions in Israel, Poland, Spain, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Brazil, Philippines, Australia, Malaysia, and China.
