Ovations!

New Directions Veterans Choir

November 13, 2012
8:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.

Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center

These military veterans will inspire you with their story and their music the same way they reached out to millions as a finalist on America’s Got Talent. All having served our country before falling into homelessness, this group found music to be the savior that moved their lives back into focus.

This event is over.

The New Directions Veterans Choir, which will present a concert as part of the Lively Arts Ovations! series, will offer a special opportunity for students and the community. At noon on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, choir members will be on hand in the lounge area of Stapleton Library to answer questions about their lives and their work. They will also perform two to three numbers to provide a taste of what concert goers will hear during that evening’s performance at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium.

The event will be hosted by journalism professor Michelle Papakie, herself a veteran with over 20 years of service in the Air National Guard. The choir members will offer candid views about their experiences in the armed services as well as the challenges they faced upon returning home.

As audience favorites on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, the New Directions Veterans Choir proved that their amazing voices are as inspiring as the story behind their founding. Founded and directed by George Hill, the choir consists of men and women who have served proudly in the United States military and are current or former residents of New Directions transitional facility, a center dedicated to helping homeless veterans reclaim command over their lives.

This event is brought to campus by the Lively Arts and its educational division, ArtsPath, and in partnership with the IUP Libraries through the Mary Jane Schafer Memorial. It is the first of three events being presented through this partnership. Questions on the outreach may be directed to the Lively Arts office at 724-357-2787 (ARTS).

Tickets are now on sale for the evening performance and can be obtained at the HUB box office or at IUP Tickets. Tickets will also be available at the door starting at 7:00 p.m. that evening.
