Eberly Faculty, Students Attend American Society for Competitiveness Conference

The 23rd annual conference of the American Society for Competitiveness (ASC) attracted nearly 150 participants, including Eberly faculty members, administrators, and 21 IUP Business honors students.

Other participants included faculty, business professionals, and policy makers who came from other countries, including India, Jordan, Lebanon, Mexico, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.

Students at the ASC conferenceThe theme of the conference, held October 25–27, 2012, in Crystal City, Va., was “Economic Dynamism and the New Global Business Paradigm.”

Eberly students attended a luncheon program and session focused on Leadership for Competitive Advantage. The luncheon included a talk on Global Competitiveness from the Perspective of a Small/Mid-sized Business by ASC award winner Bryan Putt (IUP, 1986), chief executive officer of American International Relocation Solutions.

Other featured sessions at the conference included Child Labor in an Age of Outsourcing and Impact of Freedom on International Competitiveness of Nations.

Keynote speakers this year addressed timely topics such as:

  1. Receiving the ASC awardCan America Get Its Mojo Back?—Bill Hackney, Senior Partner, Atlanta Capital Management Company
  2. Two Paths Forward: Romney and Obama—Grover Norquist, President, Americans for Tax Reform
  3. Geopolitics of the Dark Side: Oligarchs, Cartels, and Corruption!—Rear Admiral Chris Parry, Defense and Security Specialist with World Check, U.K.
  4. Federal Financial Management: Sources of Efficiency and Inefficiencies in Budgeting and Auditing—David Norquist, A.T. Kearney

Over the years, ASC has awarded individuals who have been responsible for boosting competitiveness at the firm, industry, and national/regional levels. Putt, Hackney, Parry, and David Norquist were recipients of ASC awards this year.

Members of Eberly faculty involved in ASC include Prashanth Bharadwaj, ASC Conference Academic Program chairman; Abbas Ali and Robert Camp, founding members of ASC; and Susan Brant, ASC treasurer.

In addition to the annual conferences, ASC has three publications—Competitiveness Review, Advances in Competitiveness Research, and Competition Forum.
