IUP Young Alumni Award Recipient Speaks to Finance Students

An IUP Young Alumni Award recipient spoke to finance students on November 5, 2012.

Bryan Moore, a December 2007 Finance Department graduate, works as a senior private equity officer for the South Carolina Retirement System Investment Commission. His responsibilities include sourcing and analyzing new investment opportunities for the private equity and hedge fund portfolios, instituting practices to improve oversight and governance, and participating in strategic investment allocation discussions.

Bryan Moore and students“The selection by ECOBIT [Eberly College of Business and Information Technology] to receive the Young Alumni Achievement Award is truly a great honor,” Moore said. “My success to date is a product of the level of education that I received at IUP, and it makes me proud to tell people about my alma mater.”

The Indiana, Pa., native and son of technology support and training professor Wayne Moore spoke to two groups of students, a finance class, and the Student Finance Association and SMIP team.

During the finance class, Moore told the students having a broad understanding of business is important because it makes them a valuable employee. He used examples of when he used the management, marketing, legal studies, accounting, and information technology skills he learned during his time at IUP.

While speaking to the Finance Association and SMIP, he spoke about his career, the current macroeconomic environment, and investment opportunities. He also gave the students career advice and job-search techniques that helped him land his first job out of school.

Moore encourages students to get involved on campus, and not just be putting your name on a sign-up list.

“Not only do you need to sign up for student organizations, but you need to be an active participant,” he said. “The job market is competitive, and when you can point to an active leadership role, you can differentiate yourself from the pack.”

Since graduating, Moore has remained active with his alma mater. He has participated in three Business Day events and serves on the ECOBIT Business Advisory Council.
