Litton Quartet Joined by Guest Jazz Guitarist and Bassist

John StowellOn Monday evening, November 12, 2012, the Litton Quartet will present its second program of the season. It will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of John Sutton Hall.

The program will feature new and old works in collaboration with acclaimed jazz guitarist John Stowell. Nathan Santos, jazz bassist, will also join the quartet in works based on classical compositions of Maurice Ravel and J.S. Bach. These are multi-genre works that weave together the sounds of string quartet and jazz improvisation.

The jazz guitar mastery of John Stowell has been delighting audiences since the 1970s. The list of artists with whom he has collaborated speaks for itself. Most notably, he has performed with flutist Paul Horn and bassist David Friesen as well as Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Art Farmer, Herb Ellis, Bill Watrous, Richie Cole, and many more. Stowell’s album with Davis Friesen, Through the Listening Glass, was named one of the ten best albums of the decade by the Los Angeles Examiner. He was twice chosen as “Talent deserving more recognition” by Downbeat Magazine.

The Litton Quartet will also welcome back Nathan Santos, who performed Dvorak’s quintet with the Litton last season. Now in the guise of a jazz bassist, Santos joins us from his new teaching position at Tiffin University in Ohio.

The Litton Quartet is IUP’s quartet in residence. Its members include Stanley and Swana Chepaitis, violin; Raul Faure, viola; and Linda Jennings, cello.

Tickets for the concert are sold in advance at the Hadley Union Building. They will also be sold at the door starting at 7:15 p.m. the night of the recital. Tickets are $9 regular admission, $8 for senior citizens, and $6 for students and children.
