Morning of Meditation on November 10

Visiting guest Daniel Schenck, an experienced meditation teacher, will lead a Morning of Mindfulness Meditation at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at the Coop Ski Hut.

The IUP and Indiana communities are invited to spend Saturday morning learning and practicing some of the basics of mindfulness meditation. The morning will include instruction and practice of sitting (on cushions and chairs) as well as walking meditation. The sessions are free and open to the public. No prior experience is needed, just wear comfortable clothing. The Co-Op Ski Hut is located at 239 College Lodge Road in Indiana.

Mindfulness meditation is a general term that is associated with quiet meditations, as opposed to meditations that involve elaborate processes such as chanting or prayer practiced in religious traditions. The principles of mindfulness meditation are simple to understand, but require effort, especially in the beginning. There is a mistaken concept that meditation is about “stopping all thoughts.” Mindfulness meditation acknowledges the constant chatter of thoughts, emotions, and sensory stimulation. It does not strive to stop those thoughts, but creates an awareness of their presence which changes our relationship to the thoughts. Studies show that mindfulness meditation provides benefits for physical and mental health.

The morning sessions will be led by Daniel Schenck, who has practiced meditation for over 30 years and has studied with many teachers in the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. A member of Karma Thegsum Choling (a Tibetan mediation center) in Indiana, he currently teaches mindfulness meditation in a pain research project at the University of Pittsburgh.

This event is sponsored by Karma Thegsum Choling and the IUP Mindfulness Living Learning Community. For further information, go to Karma Thegsum Choling or call 412-670-3560.
