Management Groups Tour S.W. Jack Cogeneration Plant

Tour of the Power PlantThe Management Association, Student Operations Management Association, and the Society of Human Resource Managemnt took a tour of the S.W. Jack Cogeneration Plant on October 24, 2012.

Upon entering the plant, the groups discovered that the power plant is more than the smokestacks that first meet the eye. Not only does the power plant produce the electricity for the university, but it also produces stream and hot water which run the university’s heating and cooling systems.

During the tour, plant employee Mark Labant showed the group the operations of the facility as well as the trading aspect of the plant. The plant is available to be up and running 24/7, and, with only seven employees, that is pretty remarkable. Labant mentioned that the plant has evolved over the many years from being a coal burning plant to becoming a natural gas burning plant. This makes this power plant very clean and eco-friendly.

“Touring the power plant here at the IUP campus was a great experience as a student. It was very informative and interesting. The tour included a tour of the facility, understanding how the buying and selling of energy works, and how IUP benefits from the power plant,” said sophomore Megan Moulden.

The group realized that the S.W. Jack Cogeneration Plant is an extremely important aspect necessary to keep IUP up and running.
