Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority will host a Women's Empowerment Program on Thursday, November 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the HUB Ohio Room.
Women hold up half the sky. How we treat women and girls is absolutely essential to who we are as a people. Women hold up half the sky, inspired by a Chinese Proverb, is a movement raising awareness of women's issues, but to also provide concrete steps to fight these problems and empower. This event will be a program to raise awareness about Women Oppression Issues and celebrate what women have done on campus. The goal is to get a bunch of women on campus together to speak up about gender equality issues (things they've had to deal with, etc). Educate about the available resources on campus pertaining to gender equality, sexual violence, abortion, and economic empowerment.
The program will include:
- Get Involved- A short video, How do you hold up half the sky? We will be asking various women around campus to participate in the video, so if you a see a woman walking around campus asking for opinions, don't hesitate to speak your mind.
- Get Engaged- Discussion forum topics including economic empowerment, gender gased violence, maternal mortality, abortion rights, and gender equality.
- Use Our Voices- To empower yourself you can inspire those around you; we plan to write cards that will be sent to young girl in Tanzania.
- Banner- This was to be in the center of the Ohio Room and we would have every one in atendance contribute to the banner. Everyone will add their own twist to the banner and it will be posted in the Oak Grove.
- Pictures- We can have the book on display with this collage and statistics and such. We will have everyone draw on a sheet of paper ‘Women Hold up Half the Sky’ this will be put together as a huge collage for display in the library.
- Tabling- Various organizations will be there talking about how their organizations empower women locally.
All are welcome, refreshments will be served.
