The HoodleBug Brass Tours Russia

HoodleBug Brass in St. PetersburgThe HoodleBug Brass, IUP’s brass quintet-in-residence, recently participated in two brass festivals in Russia.

On October 7–16, 2012, the five members of the HoodleBug Brass traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia, and then to Moscow, where they participated in two different brass festivals. The members of the HoodleBug Brass include Kevin Eisensmith and David Ferguson, trumpet; Jack Scandrett, horn; Christian Dickinson, trombone; and Zach Collins, tuba. Ferguson is the assistant dean of the College of Fine Arts; the other four are members of the faculty for the Department of Music.

The HoodleBug Brass were invited to participate in the International Trumpet Festival of Russia, held in St. Petersburg with Irina Vakulenko, director. Also featured at this event were P. Bradley Ulrich, professor of trumpet at Western Carolina University, and Dennis Edelbrock, professor of trumpet at George Mason University. While in St. Petersburg, they participated in a master class with students of the Rimsky-Korsakov Academy of Music and presented four performances, including a concert at the Fortress of Peter and Paul.

Following the five-day stay in St. Petersburg, the quintet traveled to Moscow, where they again presented clinics and master classes to students of the Moscow Conservatory and participated in a gala concert as part of the Moscow Brass Day festival. This event was organized by Vladislav Lavrik, principal trumpeter of the Russian National Orchestra.

HoodleBug Brass in MoscosWhile in Russia, they also had the opportunity to visit several museums, cathedrals, and other historic sites, including the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (Cemetery), where numerous famous Russian composers are buried, including Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Moussorgsky.
