Mathematics Faculty Colen and Navaratna Publish on Mathematics of Voting Systems

Yong Colen and Channa Navaratna, faculty members in the Mathematics Department, along with Jung Colen, a graduate of the M.Ed. in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Education program, published “Power Indices and U.S. Presidential Elections” in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics journal, Mathematics Teacher.

The 2000 presidential election provides an ideal backdrop to introduce the electoral voting system, the weighted voting system, and the Banzhaf and the Shapley-Shubik Power Indices. (Lloyd Shapley is the 2012 corecipient of the Nobel Prize for economics.) Through investigating these concepts, the authors show students how to solve authentic, real-world problems and value the utility of mathematics.
