Ovations!

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

October 23, 2012
8:00 p.m.

Fisher Auditorium, IUP Performing Arts Center

One of the funniest and most unique groups out on tour today, this quirky ensemble will get you ROFL (translation: Rolling On the Floor Laughing) as it spins out familiar, popular, and classical tunes in a way never heard before. Their dry and quick humor is matched only by their virtuosic performance on this rapidly resurfacing instrument.

This event is over.

From across “the pond,” the Lively Arts brings the all-strumming, all-singing Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain to Fisher Auditorium on Tuesday, October 23, 2012. Presented as part of its Ovations! series, this virtuosic and heavily comedy-laden group will perform at 8:00 p.m. as the finale event of its eight-city U.S. tour.

The Orchestra was formed in 1985 as a bit of fun. However, the first gig was an instant sellout, and they have been performing ever since. They have become something of a national institution. According to the the Independent in the U.K., “They are the best musical entertainment in the country... worth traveling a thousand miles to hear.”

The “Ukes,” as they are often called, claim they go from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana via Otis Redding and Spaghetti Western soundtracks and take the audience on a “a world tour with only hand luggage.”

The UOGB has given hundreds of sold-out concerts across the world, including Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Poland, France, the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Japan. They have more recently performed sellout shows at the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and New York’s Carnegie Hall. They will return to Carnegie Hall as part of this year’s U.S. tour prior to visiting Indiana.

The “Uke’s” music has been used in films, plays, and commercials, while film clips of the Orchestra’s live concerts and TV appearances on websites such as YouTube have been watched by millions Collaborators have included Madness, David Arnold, the British Film Institute, the Ministry of Sound, Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens), and the Kaiser Chiefs.

As part of their visit to Indiana, the UOGB will present a special “Uke Jam.” Community members who have a ukulele are invited to bring it to the jam prepared to play Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” These brave community members with then join the Orchestra from their seats to perform the work during the concert. You can find out more information, see the music, and sign up for the jam by checking the outreach information on the Lively Arts’ website.

Tickets are $12 for children and students, $18 for senior citizens and groups of 15 or more, and $23 for regular admission.
