The University Chorus and IUP Chorale will perform “A Choral Collage” on Sunday, October 14, 2012. Marking the debut concert for Ryan Beekan, newly appointed director of choral studies, the concert will begin at 3:00 p.m. It will be performed in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of IUP’s Sutton Hall.
Produced by the Department of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, “A Choral Collage” will feature repertoire ranging from early Hebrew polyphony to 19th-century chamber music. It will include music originating from Estonia, Mongolia, Indonesia, and Kenya combined with works by living American composers.
Beeken joined IUP in August as an assistant professor and the director of choral activities. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance and Bachelor of Music Education degrees from Drake University and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in choral conducting from Michigan State University.
His choirs have performed at state, regional, and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association. His collaborations include projects with Simon Estes, Cantus, and the King Singers.
Beeken has been engaged as a conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the United States and he regularly presents sessions for state and regional symposia.
Prior to his appointment at IUP, Beeken taught at Michigan State University, where he conducted the Women’s Glee Club. While residing in Des Moines, Iowa, he directed the Drake Chorale at Drake University. He also taught elementary, middle school, and high school music, most recently serving as director of vocal music for Waukee Schools in suburban Des Moines.
