Straight from one of the hottest jazz clubs on the planet, world-renowned drummer Tommy Igoe and his Birdland Big Band will perform at Fisher Auditorium on Tuesday, October 9, 2012. Packed with new hits, old standards, and iconic jazz tunes, the Ovations! series concert will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center. Presented by the Lively Arts, IUP’s own Jazz Ensemble will open the concert with Igoe as drummer.

Touring with the Glenn Miller Band when he was just 18 years old, Igoe was recognized early as a drumming prodigy whose skills on the “skins” earned him nearly every junior and senior high school drumming award on the east coast. Igoe spent the 1980s and 1990s touring with such groups as Blood, Sweat, and Tears; New York Voices; Stanley Jordan; Art Garfunkel; and Dave Grusin.

In 1997, he was asked to craft the drum set for Broadway’s The Lion King, a now-legendary production integrating modern drums with traditional African percussion which set a new benchmark for the diversity of sound in musical theater.

With the release of his groundbreaking 2004 bestseller Groove Essentials, Igoe’s technical methods of composing for drums has become a staple in universities and jazz clubs alike and have revolutionized 50 years of pedagogy in the field. Igoe’s second book and DVD, Great Hands for a Lifetime, remains the drum world’s number-one selling educational product. Igoe’s newest book and DVD, Fillosophy, brings his unique insight to the often confusing world of fills and solos.

Igoe’s Birdland Big Band plays weekly at the famous Birdland Jazz Club in New York City, where every one of his shows has sold out, making Igoe and his band one of the hottest musical ensembles in the country.

This dynamic new show recreates the ambience of a night at Birdland, the jazz Mecca founded in 1949 and named after alto saxophone player Charlie “Bird” Parker. Featuring New York’s finest musicians, the Birdland Big Band provides a musical event that goes beyond the traditional club experience and sets a new standard for jazz orchestras in the 21st century.

As a special part of his Indiana engagement, Igoe will solo with the IUP Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Jack Stamp, at the start of the concert.

Tickets are available now at the Hadley Union Building, by calling 724-357-1313, or online at IUP Tickets. Tickets are $12 for children and students, $18 for senior citizens and groups of 15 or more, and $23 for regular admission.
