The IUP Sailing Club will host the third annual Septemberfest on Saturday, September 29, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Yellow Creek State Park, Rt. 422, Penn Run.
The IUP Sailing Club is partnering with The Friends of Yellow Creek to host the third Annual Septemberfest. Events will be centered at the Day Use Area and beach. Admission is free. Sailing Club members will display the fleet of JY15s recently acquired and will offer a ride to IUP community members.
In addition to sailing, the celebration of the park will feature events and activities for all ages and tastes. Among the highlights, will be guided kayaking tours led by park naturalist Mike Schaeffer. A dozen DNCR kayaks will be available for participants' use, or visitors can bring their own. Active visitors can also enjoy free canoeing and paddleboating. Several popular music groups from Indiana County will be sharing their music throughout the day. They include: "Mu," Remaining Green, Grist for the Mill, and William Forrest.
The day begins with the 9:30 a.m. registration for the Mountain Bike race. Later in the day, volunteers will lead bike tours for the public along a section of the park's noted "single-track" bike trail. Volunteers have created, maintained, and placed markers on over 15 miles of trail looping through the woods and around the lake. The FOYC has also recently published a topographical map featuring these trails on one side, and fishing map on the reverse. The maps will be available for sale at Septemberfest. There will be a display of wooden sailboats, as well as sailing and canoe races. Sailors are expected to come from throughout Western PA. Friends of Yellow Creek sponsored a wooden sailboat building project this past winter. Septemberfest achieves two goals, according to Friends of Yellow Creek co-chair Ken Sherwood. Tis celebration helps promote the park by bringing out visitors from across the county to enjoy this valuable commonwealth resource. The event also serves as FOYC's primary annual fundraiser. FOYC uses all funds raised through food sales, the races, maps and T-shirts, as well as memberships to enhance the park.
The sailing club meets weekly for "shore school" and sails most weekends during Fall and Spring.
