McCarthy Named Inaugural Chair of National Board for Certified Counselors Foundation President's Circle

Professor John McCarthy, Department of Counseling, has been named the inaugural chair of the President's Circle of the NBCC Foundation, a nonprofit philanthropic affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors, the nation’s premier professional counselor certification board.

McCarthy is director of the Center for Counselor Training and Services, which offers professional workshops to undergraduates, graduate students, and mental health professionals. He also consults with the psychology department at Tbilisi State University in the Republic of Georgia through participation in the International Academic Fellowship Program of the Open Society Institute. He is also a past chair of the board of directors of the Center for Credentialing & Education.

His professional interests include international issues in counseling, professional help-seeking attitudes and behaviors, and motivational interviewing.

The NBCC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission of leveraging the power of counseling by strategically focusing resources for positive change. 

NBCC began offering the counseling profession’s flagship credential—National Certified Counselor—in 1983. Today more than 50,000 professional counselors throughout the world hold the NCC credential.
