IUP String Project Open House Kicks Off the Semester on September 15

The IUP String Project will host its opening event of the year, an Open House for new and returning students, on Saturday, September 15, from 11:00 am to 12:30 p.m. All students and parents are welcome!

The event will provide an introductory session and instrument petting zoo for new beginning students; a variety of interactive musical activities for string students; an informational session for parents; and, at the conclusion, an informal recital by String Project teachers and students.

Activities will be led by Professor Swana Chepaitis, String Project master teacher; Professor Stanley Jennings; Professor Linda Jennings; and the String Project teachers, music students in the Music Department.

The Open House will be held in Room 126, Cogswell Hall. It's free and open to any interested string students in the community.

The IUP String Project, a community music education outreach program for children ages 5–18 in Indiana and the surrounding area. The IUP String Project is also provides a teacher-training program for IUP music students who are the teachers in the program. The IUP String Project is one of thirty-two similar programs joined under the auspices of the National String Project Consortium, dedicated to promoting string music education in the United States. As a member of the NSPC, the IUP String Project joins in addressing the two main issues facing string education today: 1) the low numbers of public schools that offer string music education programs to children and 2) the critical shortage of string teachers in the U.S. The program is directed by IUP music faculty member Linda Jennings.
