Professor Marveta Ryan-Sams, Department of Foreign Languages, Spanish, presented a paper at the ninth biennial conference of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association, San José, Costa Rica, August 7–10, 2012.
In “Essays of a (Mad?) Black Cuban Woman: The 1889 Writings of África Céspedes in Minerva,” Ryan-Sams analyzed and contextualized two essays about racism, sexism, and nationalism written by the same author and published in Minerva, a magazine for Afro-Cuban women in the late 19th century.
The presentation is related to Ryan-Sams's recent research on how Cubans of African descent responded in print to the abolition of slavery and to racial discrimination against them in the 1880s.
