Season Announced for 2012–2013 Ovations! Series

Shrek the Musical

The Lively Arts at IUP announced the majority of what it plans to present during the 2012–2013 Ovations! series season at a luncheon of retired IUP faculty and administrators held Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at the Rustic Lodge in Indiana. This will be the Ovations! series second season, coming off of a highly successful inaugural season that included touring Broadway shows, performers from around the globe, and classical ensembles. The series included Broadway legend Bernadette Peters as the finale event on May 4.

This next season will follow a similar format, which proved to be warmly embraced by the community, allowing for a much greater variety of performance types than had been offered previously.

The season includes two Broadway hits, a Broadway-related family event, contemporary dance, a string quartet, jazz, Latin folk, a play, and more.

In addition to the offerings detailed below, a “headliner” event is also planned for the Ovations! lineup. Details on that performer are still being finalized and will be announced as soon as all arrangements have been confirmed.

SingAlong Sound of Music

The season will kick off with the wildly hysterical SingAlong Sound of Music. A hit that started in Great Britain and spread quickly across the globe, this highly decorated film that started with a Broadway classic will have audience members singing along to the bouncing ball and enjoying a family afternoon of great fun.

Live at Birdland

That will be followed by one of the world’s leading jazz bands from one of the world’s most prestigious clubs, Birdland in New York. The Birdland Big Band will perform under the direction of percussion superstar Tommy Igoe.

Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

Also featured during the fall months will be the hilariously entertaining Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and the inspiring New Directions Veterans Choir, a previous finalist on America’s Got Talent.

Closing the semester lineup, and just in time for the holidays, will be the Broadway family hit show Shrek: The Musical. The ugliest ogre in all of fairy tale history comes to life on the Fisher stage December 10 at a special early curtain time of 7:00 p.m.

Around the World in 80 Days

Coming to the stage in February is a theatrical version of the Jules Verne classic Around the World in 80 Days performed by the famed Walnut Street Theatre of Philadelphia. That is shortly followed by John Blake Jr.’s jazz quartet featuring a world premiere of Stanley Chepaitis’s jazz treatment of Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto.

Daedalus String Quartet

In March, Ovations! will offer the Daedalus String Quartet, the first touring string quartet to perform at IUP in nearly a decade. And, in early April, Cimarron will travel from Colombia, South America, and perform traditional Latin folk music.

Also in April, the series will present the inspiring movement of the Nai Ni Chen Dance Company combined with the sounds of the Ahn Trio in a new stunningly beautiful and graceful new work titled Temptation of the Muses.

Hair

Rounding out the season will be the iconic musical Hair. This milestone award-winning musical hits all buttons across the political spectrum that touched our nation in the turbulent late 1960s. As an off-Broadway production, Broadway production, film, and Broadway revival with several national and international tours, Hair helped defined the rock musical and all musicals that followed. It is not recommended for the younger crowd.

In addition to the Ovations! series, the Lively Arts will also soon announce the season events presented by Theater-by-the-Grove, Music Theater, Sound Choices, Dance Theater, University Museum, Kipp Gallery, and Ideas and Issues.

A brochure detailing the season and each series, along with subscription order forms, will be sent in early July. Those donating to the Lively Arts through its Premiere Club will receive order forms by mid-June in advance of the brochure. Anyone joining the club at the $250 level or higher will receive first priority for seating.
