Rowna Sutin

April 27, 2012, marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Olivier Messiaen (1908–1992). Messiaen’s music will be performed by Clewell, organ, and Wacker, flute. Sutin will sing several liturgical songs throughout the recital, and the IUP Chorale will perform several movements from the “Holocaust Cantata–Songs from the Camps” (1999) by Donald McCullough.

Esmus will also perform an organ duet with recent IUP graduate Randall Frye. Transcribed by Esmus, the duet is based on Eduard Tubin’s Symphony No. 3, Movement No. 1. In addition to the original organ transcription and Messiaen's oeuvre (for flute, piano and organ), other works are by Samuel Adler, Jehan Alain, and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.

Clewell has performed sections from this program at Newtown Presbyterian Church (Newtown, Pennsylvania) and First Lutheran Church (Johnstown, Pennsylvania). Clewell has been invited to participate in a solo recital series at the Washington National Cathedral, where she will perform parts of this same program on Sunday, January 27, 2013.
