IUP Summer Travel Course in Africa: Organizational Meeting

There will be an information session on the planned 2013 IUP summer travel course in southern Africa at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2012, in Weyandt Hall, room 6. Carl Luciano will discuss the proposed activities and itinerary and will answer questions about the study abroad course. All are invited to attend.

The Biology Department plans to offer summer travel courses in Africa for both Biology and non-Biology students. The courses will have a focus on African wildlife and on the blended culture of southern Africa.

Meeting a cheetah

IUP students and faculty will travel to national parks, game reserves, and private safari ranches across southern Africa to observe first-hand many of the major wild animal species for which the region is world-famous and to learn about conservation and management practices currently in use. Lions, buffalo, elephants, white rhinoceros, and antelope are common in the area, along with many bird species.

The group will also have many opportunities to learn about the diverse, multicultural society of South Africa in urban and rural settings around the country and to interact with individuals from many different backgrounds. Cultural experiences in Johannesburg, for example, will include the Apartheid Museum, Soweto Township, and Mandela house.

Watching the elephants

Our proposed itinerary for this three-week experience in July–August 2013 includes Johannesburg, Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo in the Republic of South Africa. We also plan to visit Simunye in the Kingdom of Swaziland. National parks and reserves on the planned itinerary include Kruger, Mapungubwe, Hlane, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, iSimangaliso, and the Cape Peninsula.

A group in southern Africa

This opportunity for travel and global learning has been offered as a summer option for IUP and PASSHE students since 1989. Faculty, staff, family, and friends may also participate.
