Workshop Description

Sex therapy is often taught as a set of technical and professional skills, requiring expert knowledge of sexual dysfunction nomenclature, diagnosis-oriented sexual history talking, and eclectic use of behavioral, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral skills, plus team networking with physicians, pelvic floor therapists, and pharmacologists. This workshop will take a different perspective, approaching sex therapy as a psychoeducational endeavor that is part of the politics of sexual life. Dr. Tiefer’s New View Campaign offers an approach to sexual problems that avoids pathologizing at the same time as it recognizes complaints and distress and the legitimacy of some forms of professional intervention. This approach to sex therapy combines knowledge of the history of sexual medicine and selective use of clinical resources so as to maintain a nonmedicalizing position. Dr. Tiefer argues that clinicians must appreciate the delicate balance between facilitating sexual self-understanding and change and buying into an antiquated medical model of “sexual function and dysfunction.” The workshop will provide a didactic introduction to contemporary sexual medicine and the New View critique along with the opportunity to discuss case examples and engage in interactive activities.
