Clar-Jeff Safe Driving Competition to be Hosted by IUP Regional Highway Safety Project

High school students will vie for approximately $2,000 in scholarships and prizes in the Clar-Jeff Safe Driving Competition at the Heritage House in Brookville from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 20, 2012.

The Pennsylvania Motor Trucking Association will design and operate the driving course which is standard for local teen driving competitions throughout the state. A team of three contestants will represent the following schools: Keystone, Brockway, Brookville, Clarion County Career Center, Clarion-Limestone, Union, and Punxsutawney. Students will be tested on perceptual driving, behind-the-wheel skills, PA driving laws, and vehicle defects.

The competition is coordinated by the Indiana Regional Highway Safety Project at IUP and is sponsored by Clarion and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Departments, The Allstate Foundation, Children’s Hospital of UPMC, AAA, PennDOT, and several local sponsors.

“The competition rewards teens for demonstrating excellent driving skills and knowledge of the rules of the road,” according to Bevi Powell, event coordinator. “The students will gain valuable practice to hone their driving skills in preparation for the competition. These are skills that they will use every day for the rest of their lives,” she added.

The eleventh and twelfth grade contestants achieved the top scores at their school on a 50 point pre-test. They also maintained clean and crash-free driving records.

In addition to the competition phases, the students will observe a Truck Safety demonstration; experience a sobriety checkpoint wearing Fatal Vision Impaired Driving Goggles; and participate in a Wii Distracted Driving demonstration, according to Clarion County Sheriff Rex Munsee.

“Students enjoy the interactive displays and demonstrations,” added Carl Gotwald, Jefferson County Sheriff. “This is a fun, but educational event for them.”

The winner of the competition will qualify to compete for $8,000 in scholarships at the Pennsylvania Motor Trucking Association’s “Pennsylvania Safe Driving Competition for Youth” to be held at Camp Hill, Pennsylvania in May. A traveling trophy will be presented to the school that achieves the top combined team score.

Local law enforcement, educators, and safety organization representatives will serve as judges for the competition.
