IUP Highway Safety Program Hosting Regional Safe Driving Competition, April 25

Local high school students will vie for approximately $2,000 in scholarships and prizes in the Indiana-Armstrong Safe Driving Competition at IUP’s Highway Safety Center on Wednesday, April 25, 2012.

The Pennsylvania Motor Trucking Association will design and operate the driving course which is standard for local teen driving competitions throughout the state. A team of three contestants will represent the following schools: Blairsville, Elderton, Ford City, Homer-Center, Indiana, Indiana County Technology Center, Kittanning, Leechburg, Marion Center, Penns Manor, United, and West Shamokin. Students will be tested on perceptual driving, behind-the-wheel skills, PA driving laws, and vehicle defects.

“The competition rewards teens for demonstrating excellent driving skills and knowledge of the rules of the road,” according to Bevi Powell, event coordinator. “The students will gain valuable practice to hone their driving skills in preparation for the competition. These are skills that they will use every day for the rest of their lives,” she added.

The eleventh and twelfth grade contestants achieved the top scores at their school on a fifty point pre-test. They also maintained clean and crash-free driving records.

In addition to the competition phases, the students will observe a Truck Safety demonstration by Tim Mills of Rosebud Trucking; experience a sobriety checkpoint wearing Fatal Vision Impaired Driving Goggles; compete in a Seatbelt Challenge and participate in a Wii Distracted Driving demonstration.

“Students enjoy the interactive displays and demonstrations,” added Terri Anthony, AAA Safety Advisor. “This is a fun, but educational event for them.”

The winner of the competition will qualify to compete for $8,000 in scholarships at the Pennsylvania Motor Trucking Association’s “Pennsylvania Safe Driving Competition for Youth” to be held at Camp Hill, Pennsylvania in May. A traveling trophy will be presented to the school that achieves the top combined team score.

The competition, coordinated by the Indiana Regional Highway Safety Project, is sponsored by ARIN I.U. 28, AAA, Aramark, Rosebud Trucking, the Armstrong-Indiana Drug & Alcohol Commission, and PennDOT.

Local law enforcement, educators, and safety organization representatives will serve as judges for the competition.
