IUP Trumpet Studio Attends National Trumpet Competition

On March 15–18, 2012, David Ferguson, newly appointed assistant dean of the College of Fine Arts; Kevin Eisensmith, professor of Trumpet; and 29 members of the IUP Trumpet Studio attended the National Trumpet Competition, which is held annually at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Inaugurated in 1992, the National Trumpet Competition has provided performing opportunities, master classes, exhibition concerts, historic and commercial exhibits, and an educational, supportive environment for nearly 3,000 students. To date, these students have represented 40 states as well six foreign countries.

National Trumpet Competition 2012Among this year’s performing artists was legendary trumpet player Doc Severinsen. IUP students also enjoyed performances by the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the U.S. Army Blues Jazz Band, Rhythm and Brass, Canadian trumpeter Jens Lindemann, Allen Vizzutti, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra principal trumpeter Thomas Hooten, and others.

Students had the opportunity to try out and to purchase new trumpets, mouthpieces, mutes, and other musical paraphernalia. Ferguson organized, rehearsed, and conducted the “Massed Trumpet Ensemble,” which performed prior to the announcement of the various competition winners on Sunday afternoon. Eisensmith served as a judge for the finals round for the Trumpet Ensemble Division.
