Lewis Assists Scientific Ocean Drilling with Connection to Informal Educators

Jon Lewis, Geoscience Department, will be sailing on the ocean research vessel JOIDES Resolution in May and June 2012 as an instructor for the Consortium for Ocean Leadership's School of Rock. In preparation, he recently participated in a prioritization workshop convened in Washington, D.C., by the Deep Earth Academy.

The goal of the workshop was to prioritize pilot projects for informal educators to learn about the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and to use the JOIDES Resolution as a platform for effective science education. The IODP, acknowledged as one of the most successful international research endeavors in history, strives to understand the subseafloor biosphere, including life in extreme environments; environmental change, including past ocean chemistry and past climates; and natural hazards, including Earth's biggest earthquakes and the tsunamis that they spawn.
