IUP Faculty Brass Quintet to Present Recital

The HoodleBug Brass will present their Spring 2012 recital on Tuesday, March 20, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in Room 121 of the Cogswell Music Building. This program is free and open to the general public.

Hoodlebug Brass Quintet

The HoodleBug Brass is the brass quintet-in-residence at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is comprised of the four full-time brass faculty within the Department of Music and one Fine Arts administrator. The ensemble performs regularly on the IUP campus and presents numerous clinics and concerts in public schools and churches throughout the region each year.

The HoodleBug Brass released its first compact disc, entitled Brass Fac’s, in March 2004. Their second disc, Off the Trac’s, was released in October 2009. The quintet performs works of all styles, from the Baroque to contemporary, pop, and jazz. The HoodleBug Brass will travel to Russia in October 2012 to participate in brass festivals that will be held in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

The program will feature music by American composer John Cheetham and Dutch composer Jan Koetsier. Also featured will be “Variations on America” as composed by Charles Ives and arranged for brass quintet by Henry Howey. The program will conclude with Lew Pollack’s “That’s a Plenty.”

Hoodlebug

A “HoodleBug” is a local term for “doodlebug,” the name given to a single-car, self-propelled train or trolley. At the southern end of the IUP campus can be found the Hoodlebug Trail. This is a six-mile recreation and commuter trail located in the central portion of Indiana County.
