Theater-by-the-Grove and IUP Music Theater at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present the musical Chess, opening February 23, 2012. Performances are slated for February 23–25 and February 29–March 3 at 8:00 p.m. A matinee will be presented on Sunday, February 26, at 2:00 p.m. Performances will be presented on the Waller Hall Mainstage.

ChessChess moves beyond the quiet game of decorous strategy when its story meets the dynamic rock-scored musical. The main characters form a love triangle intensified by governmental propaganda once associated with American and Russian world chess championships. Hit songs include “I Know Him So Well,” “Pity the Child,” and “One Night in Bangkok.”

The lovers negotiate through a maze of political intrigue, personal responsibilities, and international conspiracies that unleash the potential beauty and treachery of the human heart.

The power of Chess is most evident in the explosive score, conceived by ABBA composers and creators of Mama Mia, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. For the lyrics, they teamed with Tim Rice, lyricist for Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, The Lion King, and many others.

Chess Director Jeannie-Marie Brown says, “Our production explores the mastery of the score in the context of Anatoly, Florence, and Freddie battling to win a fractured game of love.” She invites you to “join the treacherous maze of contradictions, engage with the players—their politics, savagery, and fragility—and explore the bounds of the human heart.”

This musical contains subject matter that may not be appropriate for younger audiences.

Tickets for Chess are available at the Hadley Union Building, located on Pratt Drive of the IUP campus, and online at IUPTickets.com. Seats remaining will be sold at the door starting forty-five minutes before each performance.
